Offlimits events have a reputation second to none and wherever possible we cater for a family atmosphere. The Waiouru Discoverer will be no exception. We can never guarantee the weather but we can assure you of another Offlimits excellent event.
The Waiouru Military Training Area has flora, fauna and geographical features that are totally unique to the area. Its 163,000 acres Stretch 55kms from the Highway one eastwards and from Waiouru town its northern border is approx. 25 Kms away.
In 2016 we will just be using much the same area as we did for our very succesful inaugural event in 2015. The western side bordered by State highway One. A right angle line from the camp SH1 for 10 Kms is the southern boundary. The Moawhanga River its eastern Boundary, bounded by the lake itself in the North.
The main course will be approx. 40 Kms of well-groomed and smooth tank tracks. There will also be several alternatives along the way for families or those who would like a less challenging course. To take a more direct and gravel road to the Lunch break spot or in fact back to home. The aim is for us all to arrive at Lake Moawhanga by lunch time. Offlimits will provide a sausage sizzle at the Lake at lunch time or you can have us take your own lunch to the luncheon venue. Or if you prefer your support team will be able to meet you at the lake which has a tarsealed access. This access is into a restricted area and entry and exit will be controlled.
Then more trails for those who want on the way home to the camp. Or a gravel road trail for those who prefer or you could just stay and enjoy the view and finish your ride here.
Because of the family theme of our events we encourage camping on site. Thus for those who would like to there will be camping and hot showers and toilets available on the Waiouru Sports Ground, which is signposted from about 400 metres from the QEII Army museum on SH1.
The trails will be marshalled and we will have recovery units on the trails for those who may need assistance. Our Marshals will have continuous radio contact with Ride Control and other marshals as well as comprehensive first aid coverage.
This is a fun ride it is not organised as a race but of course you may travel at whatever speed you feel comfortable with. All we ask you to do is be courteous and respect other riders. There are no prizes as such other than the breath taking panorama and the brilliant company of your fellow mountain Bikers
The graph below is a rough guide of the elevations of the main track. They were complied some time ago but will remain fairly accurate.
