KAIMANAWA CLASSIC – 2 or 3 DAY GUIDED HORSE TREK

This is the 6th year of the very successful Offlimits Kaimanawa Horse trek. Each previous year the Trek has been conducted in and around the Argo Valley. This year we wanted to show you some more of the Panoramic beauty contained in the 163,000 acres of the training area.
Day one will concentrate on areas where we are most likely to find the greater concentration of Kaimanawa horses. Day two and three while we are still likely to see some horses but we will concentrate showing you a whole new vista of this Central Plateau Wonderland.

This iconic horse trek explores the military training area in the Central Plateau. You will see a stunning alpine environment with big tussock covered ridges, the beautiful Lake Moawhango, with a back drop of the snow capped peaks of Ruapehu’s three mountains and the Kaimanawa forest park.
KAIMANAWA CLASSIC 2017
The first day of the 2017 trek we will be targeted to see as many Kaimanawa Wild horses as possible. It is truly wonderful to see these beautiful horses up close in their natural environment.
Our second day, having spent the night camping at Shepherds Hut in Paradise Valley we will explore new ground to Edinburgh castle and north to Lake Mowhango shore. Pack your bikinis girls just in case you’d like to swim your horse at our lunch stop by the lake. Those who wish to do a two-day trek you will start with this ride.
Day three, we will have a steady climb up for a stunning view over the plateau and the Kaimanawa forest park. We ride along the top of Paradise Valley then down to Club Med. All Covering new ground.
This is a self-catering trek. So bring your own food and cooking facilities
Our first night of the three-day trek will be at the military camp ‘Abbissia’ off the Desert Road. There will be plenty of parking and hot showers and portaloos. We are required to pick up our horse poo at this site as it is used for military training. We will have a trailer and wheelbarrow on site you just need to pick it up. There is plenty of water and grass for the horses.
Our second and third nights we will be camping at Shepherd’s hut in Paradise Valley off the Desert Road. Crew will be on hand to direct parking. The two-day trekkers will join us at this campsite. There will be hot showers and portaloos. There is plenty of water via a stream.
This year you will need to bring your own electric tape and units. We will be camping out in the army training area where there are no fences or yards. There will be an electrified perimeter fence, then you will be able to set up your electrified pens within it. There is a small possibility of small mob of wild horses in that valley. They are of course inquisitive so our horses will need to be contained behind two lines of hot wires. Crew will be on site to assist.
This alpine environment can be hot and dry or wet and very cold, or all 4 in the one day. The tracks can go from being hard under foot to slippery. We advise you to shoe your horse. There will be areas of unsealed roads and metal tracks. We will mainly follow bulldozed tracks, motorbike and horse tracks. So expect a bit of everything including the odd steep bits on the hill climbs. There will be crew on hand and you can always lead your horse for the short distance if you’re unsure.
Camps will be marked from the Desert Road. And a map will be included in your registration pack.
‘Abbissia’ camp has a good gravel track suitable for all vehicles.
Shepherd’s hut camp has a good gravel track access. Crew will be on hand to direct parking please be patient and wait for directions once on site.
The central plateau can be hot and dry or sleet and very cold, and all these things on the same day. In this environment its best to be over prepared then lacking especially if it’s wet and cold. Check out our suggested gear list below.
This alpine environment can change quickly so we may need to change our routes if the weather becomes to rough because of the openness of the country it will make unpleasant riding. We have alternative routes planned for this scenario. So if there is an extreme fire risk or heavy rain, then the organisers reserve the right to close or alter tracks for the safety of all participants. This will be advised on the day.
This trek is not suitable for undisciplined or green horses.
It is best to bring feed for your horse as they many not be used to the tussock. Standard hay is ideal as changing your horses diet with supplements may see them bind up on a longer ride. If your horse kicks please mark its tail with red tape. It is your responsibility to keep your horse away from other horses. This country is not suitable for bitless uncontrolled horses.
No stallions. No pregnant mares. Horse must be over 4yrs. There will be quad support on this trek so introduce your horse to these before they come on the trek.
You will get the most out of this trek if you and your horse are reasonably fit. You don’t have to be endurance fit by any means, as this is a walking trek. Every rider must wear a riding helmet. Every rider must attend the safety briefs. We are riding on military land which has unexploded ordinances to ensure you and your horses safety it is required that you follow the instructions of the safety briefs and not go riding off on your own or in front of the lead guides!!!! The army can stop these treks if we do not follow safety requirements. If you cant follow the rules you will be sent home. Do not litter, take all your rubbish with you. No riders under 14yrs. The terrain is not suitable for beginner riders. No firearms.
Wet weathers, Thermals, Food, Cooking gear, Camera, BYO refreshment [yes you can bring your beersies], First aid kit, Riding helmet [compulsory]
Warm riding gloves, Sun screen, lip balm, Scarf or neck sock [ideal for protection against wind and dust], Tent and ground sheet, Camp chairs [the tussock is not that comfortable], Head torch, Water bucket, Electric tape and unit and standards, Electrolytes and your horse first aid kit.

We are able to provide you with a cut lunch each day if you wish to preorder. The lunch will be sufficient for the day and consist of Sandwiches, two Muesli bars (or similar) a piece of fruit and a small bottle of drink. It will come in a plastic bag so you will need to have a more robust container to carry it with you on the Trek. The cost for lunches for the three day Trek is $35 or the 2 day Trek $25. If you would like to preorder your lunches it is essential that you do so when you register. We are not able to take orders for lunches other than on the registration form. Unfortunately we are not able to cater for special diets for preordered lunches.

Trek Fees 2017
The registration fee for the 2017 Kaimanawa Horsse Trek will be:
Rider 2 day event $225.00
3 day event $295.00
Non riding companion $20 per day.
- Lunches $35 for three day trek and $25 for two day Trek
A comprehensive ‘2017 Kaimanawa Horse Trek participants guide’ will be issued in November to all those who have signed up and paid for the trek.
